Desert Island Dilemma™
You have plenty of food from the fruit trees, and the fish in the sea, but you were only able to save one barrel of water from your abandoned ship.
The answer would be easy if you could answer these two critical questions:
Do you know when you will be rescued?
Do you know when it is going to rain next?
Realizing you can’t know the answer to these two questions, I ask again how much water can you drink?
You drink the smallest amount of water to survive, because you must make your water last. You must make it to your rescue.
This is the Desert Island Dilemma™
You are not on an island but at your retirement party and your barrel of water is a barrel of money. This barrel contains all the money you have saved to last the rest of your life.
Just like before the answer would be easy if you could know the answer to the two critical questions.
How long will I live?
How will my money perform?
Realizing you can’t know the answer to these two questions, I ask again how much money can you spend each day?
You will spend the least amount you can because you cannot allow yourself to run out of money in retirement.
